Assignment Summary

Individual Report and Presentation (Emerging TechnologyEvaluation)

Description:Analysis of a nominated emerging trend in terms of its evolutionary timeline and its potential for adoption in a corporate context including consideration of the cost, uptake, usage scenarios and ethical issues associated with its deployment.

Assignment Description
The encompassing idea of this assignment is to analyse a selected emerging (information) technology trend and to present a logical and factual account of events in its evolutionary time-line to date. You will assess its likely costs and potential market penetration in a corporate context including comprehensive evaluation of one selected usage scenario along with a critical assessment of likely ethical concerns associated with its deployment in a business environment.

There are two assessment items associated with this assignment:
- A 5 minute presentation outlining the technology and its potential for use in a corporate context
- A written report presenting the technology analysis in full.
For you to gain any marks for the assignment you must meet the following requirements:
1. Deliver a 5 minute outlineof your chosen technology in a nominated time slot in the week 10 or week 11 workshop
2. Submit a copy of yourreport to TurnItInby the due time
3. Attach a completed group declaration and blank criteria sheet to your assignment

No exception will be made to these requirements.

Assignment Objectives

On completion of this assignment you should have gained skills in the following areas:

1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge in technical and socio-economic foundations, concerning the implementation and use of information systems in a corporate setting.

2. Analyse existing information systems and conceive information systems addressing business challenges and opportunities and understand the role of technology, organizations, and management.

3. Present corporate system analysis results in a professional manner and are able to address selected concerns regarding technology trends and ethical concerns.

The Assignment

Compile a report where you analyse a nominated emerging (information) technology trend (such as smart robots, affective computing, quantum computing, 4D printing, brain-computer interfaces, wearable computing, blockchain, fog computing, virtual and augmented reality, personal analytics, autonomous vehicles, machine learning, or another). Research timely projections on cost and market penetration and lay emphasis on its use in a corporate setting. Explore at least one usage scenario in greater depth, identifying the affected business processes and organizational entities. Further include into the report a critical assessment of ethical concerns going along with the deployment of the technology in a corporate environment. This may include concerns such as environmental sustainability [e.g., carbon footprint, water consumption, material recycling], personal data privacy, security and safety, human rights, fair pay, etc.). Ethical concerns may arise from different dimensions of the information systems, such as the technology as such, managerial decisions, organizational changes, etc. Write a fact-based critique addressing at least one ethical concern associated with the deployment of an information system. The material in the report should be supported by a comprehensive investigation of the underlying facts using public data sources.

The idea of this assignment is to be flexible and demonstrate your ability to investigate the selected technology and the ramifications associated with its adoption. There are not intended to be any unnecessary rules that prevent you from perusing an idea you are interested in. If you have an idea, please get your tutor to check it, so you know it will be appropriate for the assignment.

The assessment for this assignment comprises two parts:

1. A 5 minute outline of the technology as might be presented to a supervisory or funding body such as the Management Team or the Board in a corporate context

2. A written report outlining full details of the proposal.

The Presentation
The first part of this assignment is a presentation. This is intended to be a 5 minuteoverview of the main features, development timeline, an indicative usage scenario and ethical considerations associated with the technology.

The presentation may be supported by a maximum of seven (7) slides (powerpoint, Prezietc) in order to convey the major points of your presentation to the audience.

You must cover the following areas in your presentation:
- The key features of the chosen technology
- An overview of its development timeline to date and likely future developments
- A description of a potential deployment scenario in a corporate context
- An overview of one (or more) ethical consideration(s) that arise with this technology and how it/they might be addressed.

The Report

The second part of this assignment is a report. A report is a clearly structured document that presents information as clearly and succinctly as possible. Reports should be easy to read and professional in presentation. Reports are used to help make decisions or account for actions. The common feature of all reports is that they are structured into sections with headings.

Your report should have the following sections:

A. Completed declaration and criteria sheet. Found at the end of this document.

B. Title page. This page should include: the report title, which states the report's purpose and your name. It should be designed well.

C. Executive summary. An executive summary is a paragraph that provides the reader with a quick overview of the entire report, including its purpose, context, methods, major findings, conclusions and recommendations. It is often easier to write the executive summary once the report has been completed.

D. Table of contents. The table of contents lists the main sections (headings) of the report, and the page on which each begins.

E. Introduction. The introduction should define the purpose of the report, outline the issues to be discussed (scope) and inform the reader of any limitations applying to the report, or any assumptions made.

F. Selected Emerging Technology. This section introduces the selected emerging (information) technology outlining the motivating factors for its development, scientific or technological breakthroughs on which it is based, the benefits that the technology provides, any factors that have inhibited its uptake or time to market, and likely future developments. This introduction should be based on factual details that you have identified in the academic literature (and suitably referenced!) and presented in the form of a chronological account.

G. Indicative Usage Scenario. This section should explore one or more usage scenarios for the technology in a corporate context. Consideration should be given to any business processes, information assets or organizational entities affected by the deployment of the technology. Specific issues that might arise as a consequence should be identified and suitable remedies should be proposed for each of these.

H. Cost and Uptake Expectations. This section should provide an indication of the likely costs associated with the deployment of the technology for the usage context(s) identified in Section G. The likely market penetration for the technology should also be investigated and substantiated in order to build the case for organizational adoption. The cost and uptake projections should be based on reputable and current academic and industry sources.

I. Ethical Considerations. This section provides a critical assessment of the ethical concerns associated with the deployment of the selected technology in a corporate setting (such as identified in Section G). These may include concerns such as environmental sustainability (e.g., carbon footprint, water consumption, material recycling), personal data privacy, security and safety, human rights, fair pay, etc). Ethical concerns may arise from a wide range of different perspectives other than directly from the technology itself, such as issues arising from its deployment in a corporate context e.g. managerial decisions, organizational changes, etc. This section must include a fact-based critique addressing at least one ethical concern arising from the deployment of the technology in a corporate information system environment.

J. Conclusion. This summarizes the key findings from the previous sections and may be numbered here for clarity. Relate your conclusion to the objectives of the report and arrange your points logically so that major conclusions are presented first. Some reports may require a discussion of recommendations, rather than a conclusion.

K. References. This must contain all the material cited in the report. It must be accurate and consistent with the QUT Numbered referencing style. Refer to www.citewrite.qut.edu.au

L. Appendixes. These contain extra supporting information that is put at the end of the report so as not to distract the reader from the main issues. They contain detailed information, such as questionnaires, tables, graphs and diagrams. Appendices should be numbered in the order they are mentioned in the text.

Overall your report should be a maximum of 10 pages excluding references and appendices. The report should be presented in Georgia font, size 12. Section headings should be in Georgia font, size 12 bold.

You may include appropriate graphics or tables but where you do so, ensure that that you use the appropriate labels such as: · Figure 1 Key Features of Technology. · Table 1 Key issues in exploitation.

Ensure that your pages are numbered, lower right hand corner. Ensure that there are no spelling mistakes or grammar errors.

It is expected that you use a comprehensive number of sources to support your claims. Ensure that you use the QUT Numbered or APA style for the bibliography and in the footnotes for in-text citation.
