Epidemiology Practice Problems

Scenario: An urban university catering to gifted and talented (GT) epidemiology students has a population of 6,783 students (3,431 males and 3,352 females). After the Thanksgiving break, many students reported to the Health Center (HC) for various illnesses. The City Health Department was contacted to do epidemiological surveillance of the campus illnesses. Here are the results: 602 students were ill with influenza, 9 out of 275 affected males died and 4 out of 327 affected females died; 478 students had various foodborne illnesses (311 males and 167 females), 3 females died from E coli; 310 students were ill with an unknown ailment, 11 died; and lastly, 258 females and 200 males were diagnosed with STIs. With all this illness, the university cancelled a week of classes after Thanksgiving and pushed finals back one week. It was a sad time on campus; it looked like a ghost town.

Since you are a part of the Epi team from the City Health Department, please calculate the following rates to report to the HC and the university president.
