An object of mass M=3kg is attached to an ideal spring by spring constant k= 25 N/m. The 2nd end of the spring is attached to a ceiling.. The system is released and allowed to reach equilibrium. That wills b our initial position. After the system is at rest, an object of mass m=1kg is placed on top of the 1st object and released.

1. Identify forces acting on 1st object then 2nd object (i.e forces from a force diagram such as "gravity" or "normal force")
