The concept of positive and negative reinforcement can be very tough to get your arms around. Because of the thought that negative is a bad thing it is easy to confuse negative reinforcement with punishment. Negative reinforcement is not, however, punishment. It is the removal of a stimuli when the desired behavior is exhibited.
