USP 795 provides guidance about how to prepare nonsterile compounds. It is the pharmacy's responsibility to follow these guidelines and must stay in compliance with USP 795 as well. There are 3 categories of non sterile compounding to include: simple, moderate, and complex. An example of a simple compound would be making liquid Zantac from a capsule and a syrup. An example of a moderate compound would be Morphine suppositories (since this involves a controlled substance and a mold to make the suppositories). An example of a complex compound would be making a transdermal patch. This type requires special training, certain equipment, and should be made with extra precaution.
