An epidemiological assessment and a community assessment

Your unit 2 assignment is asking you to do two things: an epidemiological assessment and a community assessment. You will use YOUR community to do it. Start with the health department's website for your county. They should have the majority of the information you need there. Then, look at the information from three angles: 1) age differences, 2) gender differences and 3)socioeconomic differences. How do the health issues vary by each of these three factors?

When discussing these factors you are looking at morbidity rates, mortality rates, incidence rates and prevalence rates (epidemiological assessment) for the major health issues of the community (community assessment).

For this unit, you will tell me all about it. What are the leading issues for each of the three angles (age, gender and socioeconomic). Through this process, you will be narrowing down which one you would like to focus on for the program you will be developing.

The resources below may help you as you navigate the course. The CDC source may be all you need but I have included a variety so you would have options and could pick from your favorite. If you are new to Community Health Improvement, (CHI) I recommend you use the CDC site and click the link for "new to CHI". You may want to save these links for use throughout the term and beyond. Please remember that announcements are only posted for the week they apply to so be sure to save anything you want before the end of the unit.
