An asphalt company is paving a rural road with minimum traffic. Your estimator has provided you some preliminary calculations where she used a standard paving crew, straight trucks, and completing the project in one 12 hour day. The project is a 2” overlay on a county road 22 feet wide by one mile long. There are a 6 driveway entrances where the asphalt will be widened and sloped to the existing gravel. The engineer has provided a plans quantity of 1538 tons, your calculations agree with that quantity. The project is located 30 miles from your fixed plant. Ten miles of the trip will be through a suburban area, the remaining will be on a rural highway. Trucks are able to travel at 15 mph in suburban areas and 40 mph on rural highways (averages). A paving crew is 95% efficient which allows for equipment start up, safety meetings, traffic control set-up, etc. With the information below determine: What is the cycle time for each type of truck? How many and what type of trucks are needed. What is the cost per ton when the mix is placed in one day (12 hours) verses two days (20 hours).
