In a discussion of "winners and losers" in a major conflict, things can certainly be less clear than one may imagine. In considering World War I, Germany and Austria certainly lost this war. The victors were Britain, France, Italy (who entered the war later on) and the U.S. who also entered late. Although Russia was originally an ally, by the time of the Nov. 11, 1918 armistice, the Russians, then under Bolshevik rule (see this week's other discussion) already negotiated a separate peace with Germany.
