Alternative sentencing of criminals

There is general understanding among the public of traditional sentencing options available to judges while meting out punishment for those convicted of crimes. Increasingly, sentencing options other than imprisonment are gaining favor. In addition, there are some unusual types of incarceration alternatives available as well. What are some of those options? Why are they preferable (if at all) to traditional incarceration? Do they fulfill the traditional rationales for punishment in the criminal justice system (specific deterrence, general deterrence, revenge etc.)?
