Alternative escape routes:
- Does everyone have access to the alternative routes or do some people have no choice about which way they go?
- Are all the escape routes wide enough to allow the occupants to leave the fire area quickly enough? Are doors wide enough for the maximum expected population? Are stairs wide enough for the maximum expected population?
- Are the alternative routes always unlocked and available when they might be needed?
- Are the alternative exits well lit?
- Do the alternative exits have fire alarm call points next to them?
- Do the alternative exits lead to a place of safety?
- Can the alternative exit routes be used by all the people who may need to use them? For example, if people in wheelchairs are allowed in the building, can these people use the alternative routes?
- Are the alternative exits far enough from the primary exits so that one single fire cannot stop people using all the routes?
- Are the escape routes free from all items that might obstruct the route?
