Altered Fat Metabolism - Metabolic Response to Injury?
The stored fat deposiis are mobilized and oxidized at a high rate in order to support hyper metabolism and increased gluconeogenesis. Severely' injured patients, if unfed, deplete their fat and protein stores rapidly. The resulting malnutrition increases their susceptibility to haemorrhage, infections, organ system failure, sepsis and death.
