A common expression claims, "ignorance is bliss," yet philosophy asks us to pursue truth and wisdom, even to the point of death (as in Socrates' case). Explain the importance of rationally and constructively questioning basic beliefs and assumptions. Another way of thinking about this question is to ask yourself: why does Socrates believe that "the unexamined life is not worth living"?
