The topic that I chose to write about for my project is about mental health issues in youth and the suicide rates. I believe this is important because a good friend of mine lost her newly graduated, 18-year old son to suicide about a year and a half ago. This is a social issue that doesn't get enough attention or people talking about it. This is due to many different things such as the parents may feel like they are being judged or they might even not want to talk about it for other reasons that I plan to research on. When I was looking at potential research articles there was one that was shocking, it was about a city that had lost so many teenagers to suicide in the matter of months. The city was devastated. I wish I could find the article but mental health in general has always been a hush hush topic even when I was growing up. You didn't talk about, it was embarrassing growing up because you didn't want people to think anything was wrong with you. However today mental health is more openly talked about and accepted people are more comfortable talking about mental health.
