When administering a community survey with LGBTQ+ members, several barriers may arise, including confidentiality, trust, and access. Many LGBTQ+ folks have faced discrimination within health care or social service systems. Therefore, participants may not want to be involved in research due to the stigma they may face or if their information will be used against them. According to the NASW Code of Ethics, they are ethically committed to protecting client confidentiality and challenging social injustice by promoting client dignity and worth (NASW, 2021). Without participants feeling safe, you may not get responses or true data.
Another barrier might include sampling, depending on the subgroups you are trying to reach. For example, if you only placed ads in trans care centers, you might not reach out to nonbinary individuals. Meyer (2003) discusses minority stress that LGBTQ+ individual's face, which may affect their ability to access institutions.
To overcome these barriers, I would apply trauma-informed and culturally informed recruitment strategies. This could include partnering with LGBTQ+ programs that they know and trust, offering anonymous surveys, and providing informed consent statements. Another way would be to make sure the demographic questions reflect diverse gender identities, including everyone. Doing this could avoid unnecessary misgendering and assuming sexual orientation.
