Addressing suicide risk and suicidal ideation

Problem:

Addressing suicide risk and suicidal ideation can be one of the most challenging responsibilities for a counselor because it requires balancing compassion with the need to make sound clinical decisions that protect the client. As someone planning to work primarily with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, I recognize that many clients may also experience depression, trauma, and feelings of hopelessness, which can increase their risk for suicide. One challenge for me would be ensuring that I complete a thorough suicide risk assessment while maintaining a strong therapeutic relationship. I also recognize the importance of remaining calm and objective during these conversations so that my own emotions do not interfere with accurately assessing the client's level of risk. Sheperis et al. (2020) emphasize that counselors must use reliable assessment procedures and multiple sources of information when evaluating clients who may be at risk for harming themselves. To become more comfortable discussing suicide with clients, I would continue pursuing education and training in suicide assessment and crisis intervention, seek regular supervision and consultation, and practice suicide risk assessment through role-playing and case studies. I would also become familiar with evidence-based suicide assessment instruments, agency protocols, and legal and ethical responsibilities. According to Sheperis et al. (2020), counselors should use assessment as an ongoing process to gather information, monitor client functioning, and guide clinical decision-making. Need Assignment Help?
