Problem:
The Ruth Messinger Fellowship in Immigration Policy empowers emerging policy leaders to design innovative solutions addressing immigration challenges and advancing immigrant rights across Manhattan. The Fellowship is named in recognition of former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger in recognition of her advocacy for immigrant communities, social justice, and inclusive public policy. Over 10 weeks, Fellows will research, design, and propose citywide programs and policy initiatives to support immigrant New Yorkers. Fellows will work directly with MBPO leadership, immigrant-serving organizations, legal experts, and community stakeholders to produce actionable policy recommendations and pilot programs for implementation in New York City. Fellows will also have the opportunity to discuss their work directly with Ms. Messinger. The fellowship aims to: 1. Develop actionable policy proposals to address key immigration challenges in Manhattan. 2. Identify opportunities to expand access to city resources for immigrant communitie and reduce disparities affecting undocumented, low-income, and newly arrived immigrants. 3. Strengthen collaboration between city agencies and immigrant-serving organizations. 4. Help build the next generation of immigration policy and advocacy leaders.
