Address the dynamic interplay of several influences

Problem: Systems theory is used to understand and address the dynamic interplay of several influences in a person's life such as personal, family, friends, community, institutions, and society. The systems approach not only helps the client but also helps the social work profession recognize the complex systems that positively or negatively influence people. It is extremely useful to treat clients by helping assemble the complete picture of thoughts, behavior, and choice within their larger ecosystem of influence (The Social Work Graduate, 2024).

Person-in-environment (PIE) theory highlights the role of environment in assessing needs. It shows that people are part of a bigger system and that their behavior and well-being are shaped by these interactions. By using the person-in-environment (PIE) theory, social workers can create more effective plans by understanding the impact of social, cultural, economic, and physical environments on individual behavior and well-being and being able to develop strength-based approaches (Social Work Exam Strategies, 2026).
