Address mothers personal history of trauma experiences

Problem:

Early in treatment, Terrence's mother learns about the theft of the jacket. She is angry at him for not telling her as she spent a lot of money on the jacket. Terrence is angry at you for making him tell her about it getting stolen. He states "Why couldn't you just leave things alone?" What do you do? a) Address mother's personal history of trauma experiences in individual parent sessions since this may be at the root of her anger. b) Continue to work on affective regulation skills with Terrence individually to help him manage his anger; do not schedule any sessions with the mother. c) Tell Terrence and his mother that it is not helpful that they are both angry and that they need to stop expressing these feelings. d) Immediately bring mother into a conjoint session with Terrence to do cognitive coping together. e) In separate individual sessions with Terrence and Mom, validate their feelings and provide psychoeducation about common impacts of trauma and why children often do not disclose their trauma experience.
