Acting as a placeholder means that a general word

Q - A parameter is sometimes described as "acting as a placeholder." What does this mean?

A - Acting as a placeholder means that a general word is used in the code to represent more than one object of the same type. As in the book example, "bandMember" is used to represent the four beetles in the program. This allows us to run the program several times and use a different one of these same type objects. Another example would be test driving a car. I went to the dealer, looked at and test drove a car. The word car is holding the place for what I text drove; a Ford Mustang; Dodge RAM; Chevy Camero.
