Act of attempted murder

Problem: In 1944, a group of German officers tried to assassinate Hitler. Since they failed we do not know what the consequences of their success would have been. This was clearly an act of attempted murder. How might a utilitarian argue that this was a moral action to take?  Is there a problem in that we can never do better than estimate what the consequences might be before we act?  Do you see any problems with this approach to ethics?
