An apologia is a written defense of someone's thinking, speech or actions. It is typically written when something needs to be defended, e.g. when it appears that someone has said or done something morally wrong or socially unacceptable. No doubt, these things apply to Grendel, who has terrorized Heorot for a long time, murdering many innocent people. If there's a list of individuals who need an apologia to explain their actions, Grendel may be at the top of it. In this short assignment, I want you to give it a try. How would you rationally explain or even just make sense of Grendel's actions? Give it your best shot here. Keep in mind that a good argument anticipates any reasonable objections. It's important to acknowledge the wrong that Grendel has done--if not done, your apologia will be less credible.
