According to the CIA World Fact Book for China the growth rate is positive, with a value of 0.46%, but the total fertility rate is not much higher than Germany’s, and much less than 2.1, with a value of 1.55. Additionally, while Germany’s migration rate is positive (increasing the population slightly), China has a negative migration rate. What can explain why China’s growth rate is positive when these fertility and migration rates would suggest a long-term decline in population?
