About 20% of all angiosperm species reproduce primarily

About 20% of all angiosperm species reproduce primarily by self-fertilization in which a plant's egg is fertilized by its own pollen. Given that self-fertilization is usually thought of as an 'evolutionary dead end' leading to elimination of species, why might selfing be selected for in nature yet still be an 'evolutionary dead end'.
