A term commonly encountered in the analysis of the contingency tables. Such type of frequencies are the estimates of the values to be expected under hypothesis of interest. In a two-dimensional table, for instance, the values under the independence are calculated from the product of the suitable row and column totals divided by the total number of the observations.
