A strip of copper 20 mm wide and 550 microm thick is placed

A strip of copper 20 mm wide and 550 µm thick is placed in a uniform magnetic field B of magnitude 0.55 T, with B perpendicular to the strip. A current i = 8.0 A is then sent through the strip such that a Hall potential difference V appears across the width of the strip.

(a) Calculate the Hall voltage V. (The number of charge carriers per unit volume for copper is 8.47 1028 electrons/m3.)

(b) The current is large and we should check to see if the strip can carry this amount of current. A rule-of-thumb for wires is that the maximum current density should be less than 2.8 A/mm2. What is the current density in this strip?
