A hydrocarbon, K, adds one mole of hydrogen in the presence of a platinum catalyst to form n-hexane. When K is oxidized vigorously with potassium permanganate, a single carboxylic acid, containing three carbon atoms, is isolated. Give the structure and name of K. Explain, and give equations for the reaction.
