A hollow magnesium shaft is rigidly bonded to a solid steel

A hollow magnesium shaft is rigidly bonded to a solid steel shaft and rigidly mounted between two supports. A torque of 500 NA·m is applied at the junction between the two shafts. (Ignore the effect of stress concentration)

Determine:

a. What is the angle of twist where the two shafts are bonded?

b. What is the maximum shear stress in the magnesium?

c. What is the maximum shear stress in the steel?

d. (EC) What is the maximum allowable torque that can be applied?

Material Yield Strength

Steel

Yield Strenght shear (MPa) = 360
Yield Strength - Shear (MPa) = 150
Modulus of Elasticity (GPa) = 190
Modulus of Rigidity (GPa) = 75

Magnesium

Yield Strenght shear (MPa) = 250
Yield Strength - Shear (MPa) = 125
Modulus of Elasticity (GPa) = 45
Modulus of Rigidity (GPa) = 16

Hollow Magnesium Shaft

Length = 1 meter
Outer Diameter = 160 mm
Inner Diameter = 80 mm
Solid Steel Shaft
Length = 0.6 meter
Diameter = 80 mm
