A block of mass M, at rest on a horizontal, frictionless table, is attached to a rigid support with a horizontal spring of force constant k. A bullet of mass m and velocity v parallel to the floor (and table) and collinear with the spring strikes the block. The bullet remains embedded in the block. Decide the amount of x that the spring is compressed, in terms of m, M, v, and k.
