A 35 year-old woman goes to her physician complaining of spots on her legs and bleeding gums. On examination, she has tiny purple spots covering her legs and evidence of dried blood in her mouth. Her CBC shows hemoglobin 14 g/dl, hematocrit 42%, WBC 5000/mm³ with normal differential, and platelet count 4000/mm3 (with megakaryocytes in bone marrow).
