49116 contaminated site and waste remediation identify key

Subject objectives

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

1. Identify key concepts and knowledge about contaminants, subsurface site conditions and site investigation techniques

2. develop contaminated site conceptual models including water/rock/waste interactions

3. develop predictive models for contaminant fate/ transport

4. reflect upon and communicate professional activities

Assessment

All the assessment tasks in the subject are based around an authentic complex contaminated site investigation/design activity. The assessment items will involve both the fundamental technical knowledge needed to undertake the tasks (Task 1) as well as the written artifacts of the investigation/design process (Task 2, Task 3) and the multimedia communication of the reports. A reflection report on the engineering competencies obtained through undertaking the design tasks and a final exam examine what has been learnt. The workload for the subject is notionally 150 hours.Students should allocate time to the assessment task proportional to its weighting, their desired marks and understanding of the topic.

Feedback and class discussion on the the Project proposal and Project Design reports will be conducted during the block teaching periods which is after the report due dates. This will make late submissions of reports very problematic. If you can not submit a complete an assignment on the due date then you MUST submit what you have on the due date and then your complete assignment as soon as possible after that. This allows a reduced mark to be calculated on the late content. Typically a late assignment losses 10% of the marks per day.

Task 1: Knowledge quizzes

Intent: This task allows students to evaluate their understanding of fundamental knowledge which underpins the technical knowledge needed to undertake the design project.

TASK 2: Project Proposal

Your company has been awarded a contract to undertake a Contaminated Site Characterisation activity. This activity has been broken up into a project proposal (Task 2) and the Project Report (Task 3). The client for this Project proposal (Task 2) will be senior management in your company who would eventually authorise the work.

TASK 3: Project Report

Your Project Proposal (Task 2) for the work has been approved by senior management in your company and you can now undertake the detailed analysis of all the data provided in the Site Inspection Report and subsequently provided data. This is the report that will be provided to the client. It must be standalone since the report for Task 2 was not provided to the client. Below is the required Report Structure.
