Introduction to first line management-

Learning Outcomes - The Learner will:-

1. Understand the role of the first line manager

2. Be able to construct a personal development plan

3. Understand stakeholders and their needs

4. Be able to plan to meet those needs

5. Understand the need to develop and maintain working relationships

6. Be able to manage team performance

Task 1 - Write a short piece to show that you understand the roles and responsibilities of a first line manager to the organisation and also to individuals within the organisation. You may find it helpful to provide examples to illustrate your answer.

Guideline word count: 200 - 250 words.

Task 2 - Explain the knowledge and skills that you think a first line manager must possess in order to perform the job role effectively. Compare your knowledge and skills against those you have identified for a first line manager. Use this comparison to complete a personal development plan for yourself in order to develop your current knowledge and skills into those required of a first line manager.

Guideline word count: 450 - 550 words.

Task 3 - Identify three examples of your main stakeholders as a first line manager and what information you have, or will gather, to identify these stakeholders' needs. If using practical work based examples ensure you explain your job role clearly. 

Guideline word count: 250 - 350 words.  

Task 4 - Explain the methods you will use to prioritise the needs of your stakeholders and produce a plan to ensure you meet these stakeholders' needs. Explain how you will plan to ensure you are able to meet anticipated future needs of your stakeholders.

Guideline word count: 350 - 450 words.

Task 5 - Identify the key people with whom a first line manager will communicate and explain how you will develop positive working relationships with each of these people. 

Guideline word count: 450 - 550 words.

Task 6 - Explain how you will assess the performance of individual team members and the team as a whole. You are required to consider performance targets for your team and how you will assess the performance of individuals within your team. Describe how you, as a first line manager, will support and encourage performance improvement within your team through an appraisal system and how coaching may be used to support performance improvements of individuals. 

Guideline word count: 250 - 350 words.
