1 this time using the temperature data plot only

1. This time using the temperature data. Plot only the data in the time interval 1960 - 2009 so that you can visually compare it with the CO2 record.

2. Anti-global warming proponents claim that recently, for example in the 2007-2008 period, there is no longer evidence for global warming, and in fact that temperatures worldwide are decreasing. You may think your Figure 3 (lower plot) supports a lack of warming, because the year-to-year differences are sometimes above and sometimes below zero. In particular the 2007-2008 change is below zero. Furthermore, you can see from your ?gure that the average annual temperature change over the period 1960-2010 is in fact close to zero. What is the problem with assessing global warming using annual temperature changes? (Hint: look at the running mean in the top ?gure.)

3. Prepare a ?gure 4 that could be used to argue against the anti-global warming claims, in the same format as ?gure 3 but smoothing your data using a different length of your smoothing window.

Write a short discussion (< 1/3 page) of your argument supporting a continuing overall rise in temperatures. Support your points with quantitative data from your plots (i.e., actual numbers about temperature changes, and/or seasonal variability and over what time intervals).
