Requirement Elicitation

Introduction to Requirement Elicitation

Requirements elicitation is essentially a communication process involving different communities. Currently most of the elicitation takes through meetings and interviews, supported by telephonic conversations, electronic mail and video conferencing. Though the elicitation primarily takes place at the start of the project, an element of elicitation takes place throughout the life cycle. New requirement may be proposed during design and implementation and existing requirements may be modified or deleted.

Requirements elicitation activity can be broken down further into several takes as shown in fig 3.4.

In the beginning the analysts and users talk with each other. With the former typing to understand the latter. It necessitates the clearest form of communication. A customer will communicate to the developer to tell all the requirements. A developer responds to the customer request for help. Communication has begun.

Process Initialization:

Initially, a meeting or a type of interview is conducted for the communication between a software engineer and the customer. At the time of this first meeting no one knows how the communication should be started to discuss about   the software or what should be asked?

At this  stage, there is one problem that if they ask some things t each other it can be misinterpreted by the another person, now  both thinks how  to initial  the communication to make it successful. Yet the communication must be initiated.

Gauze and Weinberg have suggested three types of question and answer sessions to initiate such communication.

  • A session of context free questions.
  • A session of middle set questions. and
  • A session of Meta questions.

(a) A session of context free questions:  During this session, context free question are asked by the analyst to just initiate the communication between them. These questions form a complete set of questions. When these questions are asked to the customer, the developer will get the basic understanding of the problem the people who want the solution i.e., the nature of the solution that is desired, and the effectiveness of the first meeting. So this first of context free question focuses on the customer. On the understand ability of the problem its desired solutions, and the benefits. The analyst might ask type of questions:

  • Who is behind the request for this work?
  • Who are the end users?
  • What will be the profit from it successful solution?
  • Can there be another alternative source to develop the solution?
  • This question will helps them to initiate the first communication.

(b) A session of middle set question: middle set questions enable the analyst to gain a better understanding of the problem. Here the customer will present his views about the solution. This set of question is:

  • What is the good output in your concern?
  • What problem can be solved by this solution will be used?
  • Will special performance issue or constraints affect the way the solution is approached?
  • Describe the environment in which the solution will be used?

(c) A session of Meta question: A Meta question set is the last set of question which will cover the effectiveness of the meeting. The question included in this set are

  • Are you the right person to answer these questions? Are you answers official?
  • Are my questions related to the problem to be solved?
  • Am I asking too many questions or too less questions?
  • Are my questions at the satisfactory level?
  • Can a one else provide more information?
  • Am I on the right track to ask the questions?

All of these sets of questions will properly initiate the communication between them. But this step or approach is not satisfied in itself. So the chances of success of this process are less. Now this Q& A session should be converted into the form of discussion. So that they can properly solve the problem, negotiate with other and make specification.
