Introduction to Drop Test

The most correct technique of testing the armature for accurate resistance, number of turns, short and open reversed coil connection is through the drop test. Connect a low voltage DC (direct current) supply beyond the commutator segments at a distance of pole pitch.

In series insert a variable resistance with the circuit. Switch 'ON' the DC (direct current) supply and connect a milli-voltmeter to the adjacent segments as in the below diagram.

Adjust the readings to a particular value, through using a variable rheostat. On the consequent commutator segments record the milli- voltmeter readings through rotating by rotating the armature in single direction.

The location of the segments and the connection should be similar like in the first set up. The outcome could be done as detailed below:

A) The winding is correct if all the readings are similar.

B) The coil connected to the segment is short if the millimetre reads 0 or low voltage.

C) The coil connected to the segments is open if the milli-voltmeter reads high voltage.

D) The coil connected with the segments is reversed if the milli-voltmeter deflects in the reverse direction as displayed in the diagram.

Usually armatures are tested like a routine for insulation resistance and for shorted coils. Only while a fault in the armature winding is supposed, a drop test is carried out.
