Xerophytes:

Plants that grow in dry habitats or xeric conditions are termed as xerophytes. The places where available water is not existed in sufficient quantity are referred as xeric habitats, which might be of three kinds:

1. Physically dry habitats:

Where water preserving capacity of the soil is very low and the climate is dry example: Desert, Rock surface and so on.

2. Physiologically dry habitats:

Places where water is existed in excess amount, however it is not absorbed by the plants easily.

3. Physically and physiologically dry habits, example: Slopes of mountains.

Daubenmire in 1959 stated xerophytes as "plants that grow on substrate which generally become depleted of water to a depth of at least two decimeters throughout normal growth season."
