Cytochrome Pump or Electron Transport Theory:

This theory was introduced by H. Lundegardh in 1954 who recommended that anions could be transported across the membranes by cytochrome system utilizing energy discharged by direct oxidation of respiratory intermediates.

The significant postulates are:

a) Merely anions can be actively transported.

b) Cytochromes behave as carriers in absorbing anions.

c) Oxygen gradient aids in oxidation at external surface and reduction at the interior surface.

d) Transport of cations can be all along electrical gradient formed by ion accumulation.

e) Selectivity in ion absorption can’t be described

f) This is not present in plants respiring anaerobically.

Thus this theory describes respiration due to anion absorption that was termed as anion respiration or salt respiration.
