Hemoglobin is a molecule made up of four polypeptide chains, each bound to an iron-containing molecular group termed as a heme group. Therefore the molecule consists of four polypeptide chains and four heme groups.

Since a protein comprised of association of polypeptide chains, the functionality of hemoglobin depends on the integrity of its quaternary structure.
