The main cells of xylem are tracheids and vessel elements (these only in the angiosperms). The tracheids and vessel elements are dead cells which have lost their cytoplasm and only their cell wall impregnated with the lignin (an impermeable biopolymer) remained. The tracheids form tubes which communicate with neighboring tubes by the pores; the vessel elements don’t present pores however instead they communicate with successive vessel element by the perforations in their extremities.
