A shell is an interactive user interface to operating system services which permits a user to enter commands as character strings or via a graphical user interface. The shell transforms them to system calls to the Operating System or forks off a process to execute the command. System call results and other info from the Operating System are presented to the user via an interactive interface. Usually employed shells are ‘sh,csh,ks’ and as on.
