Lysosome carry out heterophagic and autophagic and digestion: autophagic digestion by digesting residual substances from cellular metabolism; heterophagic digestion by digesting substances which enter the cell.
Lysosomes wrap the substances to be degraded making digestive vacuoles, or residual vacuoles, which later migrate toward the plasma membrane fusing with it and liberating (or exocytosis) the digested material to the external.
