Red tide is a phenomenon which takes place when dinoflagellates (that is, algae from the pyrrophyte group) proliferate extremely in the ocean. Such algae release toxins which affect the nervous system and can cause death whenever ingested by marine animals and by humans which eat contaminated animals.
