The HIV infection is frequently separated in three phases: the sensitive phase, from the infection to 1 till 9 weeks after infection, a phase in that the virus replicates and the number of CD4 lymphocytes is decreased; the asymptomatic phase, lasting from 9 weeks to frequently more than 10 years, in that the viral load remains steady and the CD4 count is not strangely low; the AIDS stage, when the viral load is elevated, CD4 count is abnormally low and opportunistic diseases manifest.
