The elastic fibers are made up of a protein termed as elastin. Elastic fibers abound in artery walls, helping the maintenance of arterial blood pressure in such vessels. They are as well present in the lungs, giving them with elasticity (several respiratory diseases are caused by the destruction of such fibers). In many other organs and tissues, the elastic fibers are found in interstitial matrix.
