Human resource planning is mainly done using three ways:
i) The short-range or immediate future: The immediate future may refer to present situation and experiences and concerns such as overtime and replacements. Prior planning for human resource can serve as a guide in the immediate future. If not, a beginning should be made at once.
ii) The mid-range: The mid-range future has various time spans in different companies. It can be few months or several years also. Most people consider 2-3 years period as a mid-range.
iii) The long-range future: The long-range plan starts from five year, while 10 to 15 years span can also be used for future planning. Various trends in the economy and in the labor market define long-range plans and production’s long-term trends in the company. Long-range plans are elastic rather than rigid, general rather than specific.
