Iron acts as a component of the hemoglobin molecule and of enzymes of digestion and energetic metabolism. The deficiency of Dietary iron causes iron deficiency anemia, unusual lowering of hemoglobin concentration in blood due to scarcity of iron. (In pregnancy there is a high consumption of iron by fetus and this fact can lead to the anemia.)
