Production of antivenoms
How are the antivenoms produced? Why are antivenoms an example of the passive immunization?
Expert
Antivenoms are achieved by the following process: the venom (antigen) is inoculated in the other mammals, such as, in horses; these animals form specific antibodies against the antigen; blood from animals is collected and purified to get antibodies; this antibody-containing material is the antivenom. Whenever a human being is infected by the antigen specific antivenom is given to him/her and the action against the antigen takes place. Antivenoms may also be administered as the preventive measure and, as it is basically made up of specific immunoglobulins against some antigen, the process is an example of passive immunization.
