Substances that sustain highly hypertonic environment, such as sugar and salt, are employed in the production of dried fish, meat or fruits (for illustration, cod) since the material to be conserved are then dehydrated and the resultant dryness saves the growth of populations of decomposer beings (as such beings as well lose water and die).
