To create the DNA molecule, purine bases bind to pyrimidine bases through intermolecular bonds termed as hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonds take place whenever there is hydrogen close to one of such electronegative elements: oxygen, fluorine, or nitrogen.
In such situations hydrogen looks like containing, lost electron for such elements and a very strong polarization is formed. The highly positive hydrogen attracts pairs of electrons of another molecule forming a hydrogen bond.
