Whenever the economy does a downturn, what is the job market similar to for pharmaceutical sales representatives?

As a pharmaceutical sales representative, you will never enjoy similar level of job security as a teacher or government servant. It is a cyclical business which ebbs and flows. When a company loses a major product and does not have a substitution, things may get dicey and there might be layoffs. Or when your company gets taken over and there are number of people in the operation some people might have to find new jobs.
