The efferences (or reactions) of the nervous system can be categorize into voluntary, if controlled by the will, and involuntary, those not consciously controlled. Illustrations of reactions triggered by the volition are movements of the tongue, limb and respiratory muscles. Illustrations of involuntary efferences are those which command the peristaltic movements, the heart-beat and the arterial wall muscles.
